My most recent completed project was to find a use for the dozens of 6AQ5 (aka 6AQ5A, EL90, 6005) valves that I’ve accumulated in my tube scrounging efforts.
6BQ5 (EL84) to 6AQ5 (EL90) Converter – Finally!! Post by Dana-L » Fri May 04, 2007 8:33 pm My most recent completed project was to find a use for the dozens of 6AQ5 (aka 6AQ5A, EL90, 6005) valves that I’ve accumulated in my tube scrounging efforts.
Using a 7-pin socket, a 9-pin socket saver, some old GE tube data sheets and my cheapo Radio Shack soldering iron, I concocted the adapter shown below.

Running the first 6AQ5 I came across (a Sylvania black plate pull lying in my garage that was so grungy I first scrubbed it with a toothbrush under running water) in my modded VJ left me with a smile of satisfaction on my face and a mild ringing sensation in my ears. (Don't you just love it when you flick the switch for the first time and actually get sound?!)My VJ is set up with a 270 Ohm cathode resistor and about 300 Volts on the plates. I’m not sure what the 6AQ5 was dissipating, but I didn’t see any sign of red plating or a glowing screen grid (I’ve got a 1k Ohm screen grid resistor installed).
Now if I can just make some progress on my many other projects…
Cheers,
-Dana
